What is heirloom rice?

Heirloom rice refers to traditional varieties that have been preserved over generations for their unique aroma, texture, and flavor rather than bred primarily for maximum yield or uniformity.

How is heirloom rice different from jasmine rice?

Thai Heirloom preserves traditional rice varieties, each with its own distinctive aroma, texture, and character. We work directly with small farming communities that use locally adapted growing practices passed down through generations.

Why is heirloom rice more expensive?

Heirloom rice is grown in smaller quantities and requires more care than commodity rice. We choose to invest in fair compensation for our farming partners and preserving traditional varieties, resulting in exceptional quality from field to table.

Is every harvest exactly the same?

Like coffee, wine, or heirloom tomatoes, every harvest reflects the growing season. Weather, soil, and growing conditions naturally influence each crop. Because we work closely with our farming communities, we can tell you what makes each harvest unique.

Why doesn't Thai Heirloom taste like the rice I grew up eating?

Most supermarket rice is selected for consistency and large-scale production. Our heirloom varieties have been preserved for their distinctive aroma, texture, and character, giving each one a unique eating experience.

Is Thai Heirloom rice organic?

Our rice is grown without synthetic pesticides or chemicals. While we're working toward organic certification, we take a farmer-first approach so certification doesn't create unnecessary financial pressure on the small farming communities we work with. Our focus has always been responsible farming and exceptional quality.

What are the health benefits?

Different varieties also offer different nutritional profiles depending on whether they're whole grain or polished.

Where do the colors come from?

The colors come naturally from each variety's genetics, never from dyes or artificial coloring.

Why should I care about aroma and texture?

Because the right rice can completely change a meal. It can complement or beautifully contrast the other ingredients on your plate. At Thai Heirloom, we believe rice can be just as fun to explore as wine, coffee, or heirloom tomatoes. Every variety has its own aroma, texture, and character.

Why does every variety taste different?

Every heirloom variety reflects the place where it evolved. Soil, water, climate, local ecosystems, and generations of farmer selection all shape each rice's aroma, texture, and flavor. These aren't traits engineered for maximum yield. They're characteristics developed naturally over decades, sometimes centuries.

Are there any additives?

None. No flavors, fragrances, or additives, just rice. The aroma and flavor come from the genetics of the variety and the care our farmers put into growing it.

Where do we source our rice?

We work directly with small farming communities across Thailand to plan each growing season. Every variety is intentionally chosen for its regional heritage, growing conditions, and distinctive character, not simply for high yields.
