Sticky Rice Without a Cooker: The Thai Heirloom Steaming Method
No rice cooker? No problem. Here’s another way to get perfect rice. Whether you’re using an electric pot like mine or just a regular pot on the stove. Both get the job done beautifully.
Our Coconut Cloud and Forgotten Husband rice love this method, especially if you’re cooker-less at the moment. But heads-up: the rice cooker route is definitely easier (no long soak, no waiting game). Still, if you’re here for the cozy, hands-on process, this method delivers seriously delicious grains.

How to Steam Sticky Rice
1. Soak the raw rice in water using a 1:2 rice-to-water ratio for 4–5 hours or overnight
2. When the rice is ready, fill your pot with water a little over halfway.
3. Place the steamer basket on top and line it with cheesecloth.
4. Pour the soaked rice into the lined steamer.
5. Fold the cheesecloth over the rice, then cover with the lid.
6. Steam on high heat for 15 minutes, then open the lid and gently fluff the rice from the bottom.
7. Close the lid and steam for another 15 minutes.
8. Fluff again, serve, and enjoy!
